Blood and coagulation
CBC, blood type, ESR, PT and PTT.
Hematology
Complete blood count (CBC)
Counts red cells, white cells and platelets. Helps detect anemia, infections and other blood problems. Preparation: no fasting.
Peripheral blood smear
A drop of blood is examined under the microscope to look at the shape and appearance of the cells. Preparation: no fasting.
Blood type and Rh factor
Shows your blood type (A, B, AB or O) and whether you are Rh positive or negative. Needed before surgery, during pregnancy or for paperwork. Preparation: no fasting.
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
Measures how fast red blood cells settle; a high value suggests inflammation in the body. Preparation: no fasting.
Coagulation
Prothrombin time (PT/INR)
Measures how fast your blood clots. Ordered before surgery or to monitor blood thinners. Preparation: no fasting; tell us if you take blood thinners.
Partial thromboplastin time (PTT)
Complements the PT to check clotting before surgery. Preparation: no fasting; tell us if you take blood thinners.
Before your test
Fasting means no food or sugary drinks; plain water is fine. Bring an ID and, if you have one, your doctor’s order. Tell us what medications you take. Don’t see your test? Call us and we’ll tell you if we offer it and how to prepare.
